‘Fifty Shades’ fans not allowed to bring ‘props’ into screenings
The film has gotten plenty of people talking, but AMC Theaters is requesting fans of the upcoming erotic drama leave their toys at home.
Whether it is fifteen guys sporting clown makeup and a purple suit for the premiere of The Dark Knight or a bunch of kids swirling wooden sticks with lightning bolts sketched on their foreheads for opening night of any one of the Harry Potter films, there are always certain moviegoers who like to make their trip to the theater more than just a viewing experience. Especially when it is a subject they are passionate about.
But fans of the upcoming film adaptation of the extremely popular erotic novel Fifty Shades of Grey won’t be given the same luxuries. AMC spokesperson Ryan Noonan has basically banned any fans from bringing props relating to the film into the theater chain’s showings:
"“While we welcome those guests who want to show their excitement for a film by dressing up in costume, we do not permit weapons (real or fake), or props/costumes that would make guests uncomfortable, or detract from the moviegoing experience”"
This shouldn’t come as a big surprise to many given the film’s subject matter.

The film tells the story of literature student Anastasia Steele and a wealthy Seattle entrepreneur by the name of Christian Grey. The Fifty Shades series, consisting of three novels, chronicles the relationship between the two, which begins as a mutual attraction but forms into a “contractual agreement.”
While most reading this article know what I am getting at, the agreement these two come to is one of a dominant-submissive relationship, which begins a complicated and forbidden affair.
As stated, it isn’t a big surprise that the theater would bar certain props relating to said subject matter into the theater which would most likely included things such as whips, chains, gags, etc. as any of these could easily be construed as weapons.
And we as a nation are still dealing with the ramifications of the horrific Aurora shooting, it may be a while until such things are given leniency in movie theaters.
However, it should be noted that even members of the BDSM community condemn the film for what they say misinterprets their entire culture, stating the relationship between the main characters resembles more of an abusive relationship rather than a realistic BDSM one.
Though the book trilogy received less than spectacular reviews and the film isn’t expected to fare any better in terms of critical acclaim, the enormous popularity of the series signifies a most likely block busting opening weekend for the upcoming film and most surely film adaptations of the other two films of the series.
Fifty Shades of Grey comes to theaters in a wide release on February 14th, the weekend of Valentines Day.
P.S. My knowledge of Fifty Shades of Grey and its sequels come entirely from online sources and/or word of mouth. I have not actually read the books.
Seriously. I haven’t.
