Auburn quarterback Nick Marshall wants to be a DB in the NFL, so his invite to the combine as a QB was a surprise

Nick Marshall once led the Auburn Tigers to the BCS National Championship Game as a quarterback. Now, going into the pros, he believes he has a better shot of making it in the NFL as a defensive back. When he got his invite to the annual NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, however, he was a little surprised.

Marshall wants to pursue his dream at playing in the NFL as a defensive back. At the Senior Bowl, Marshall showed what he can do in coverage in front of NFL scouts.

When he got his invite to the Combine, he was grouped with all the quarterbacks rather than the defensive backs.

However, Marshall plans on participating in the defensive back drills in Indianapolis too, so that he can have a chance to show scouts that he can play in coverage on Sundays.

“I wasn’t even familiar with that. This is my first time hearing that,” Marshall said, “But I’m planning on doing defensive back drills at the combine.”

One of the good things for Marshall is that teams are allowed to take a look at players at other positions besides the one they’re listed in, so any teams interested in him as a defensive back will have the chance to see what Marshall can do covering wide receivers.

Marshall has the size and speed to play defensive back as well. Another thing going for the former Auburn quarterback is that having played the quarterback position, he has an understanding of what to expect as a defensive back and probably has a better grasp of the tendencies of the quarterback position than most other defensive backs.

Give credit to Marshall for doing whatever it takes to make his dreams of playing in the NFL come true. He had the intellect to know that he might be better suited at having a chance at a career by switching positions.

Oftentimes players are dead set on getting into the league at the quarterback position, when they’re physical traits and abilities make them better suited for another position.

The NFL Combine is in a few weeks in Indianapolis, where it will be broadcast on the NFL Network. Marshall will have his chance on a national stage to show he has a shot at making it in the league.
