ESPN NFL Draft expert Todd McShay said that quarterback prospect Jameis Winston is comparable on the field to Indianapolis Colts star quarterback Andrew Luck.

Andrew Luck has turned into one of the NFL’s best quarterbacks, but still has a long way to go before he can be included into the “elite” category of quarterbacks. That being said, ESPN NFL Draft expert Todd McShay sees a lot of Luck in 2015 prospect Jameis Winston.

McShay made his thoughts very clear, and it is something that many people will debate and disagree with.

“From purely on the field, the grade for Jameis Winston is just behind Andrew Luck’s in the last ten years and there is nobody else in between.,” McShay said.

During his collegiate career, Winston made some questionable decisions off the field and showed some flaws on the field. The fact that McShay is looking at Winston as the second-best quarterback in the past decade is a bit surprising. Most fans and analysts don’t believe that Winston is even the best quarterback in the 2015 draft class.

Winston ended up throwing for 7,964 yards, 65 touchdowns, and 28 interceptions throughout his two-year career with the Seminoles. They aren’t bad numbers at all, but they certainly aren’t the type of numbers that second best quarterback of the past 10 years would be expected to have.

Marcus Mariota is widely expected to be the best quarterback out of the 2015 NFL Draft, but McShay obviously doesn’t believe that. It is going to be very interesting to see what ends up happening in the draft, and how both of soon-to-be rookies do in their first season. Winston’s troubles off-the-field have scared quite a few teams, and he hasn’t shown much remorse for his actions either.

Obviously McShay made it clear that Winston’s play on the field made him the second best quarterback prospect behind Luck. If they were comparing off-field issues too, he wouldn’t be anything close to Luck.

At 6’4″ and 230 pounds, Winston’s physical presence cannot be denied. He is a very similar type of build to Ben Roethlisberger and Luck, and he showed flashes of being a very good leader as well. Those are good things, but his maturity will have to improve before he can reach his full potential.

There are quite a few teams that will need a new quarterback this offseason. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have the No. 1 overall pick in the draft, while the Cleveland Browns are another team that has expressed interest in drafting another quarterback. It is going to be interesting to see what type of NFL career Winston puts together, but this is a glowing comment from McShay.
