The Sacramento Kings are trying to hire George Karl as head coach, but it looks like that is more unlikely than previously thought.

More from NBA

After talks between the Sacramento Kings and former NBA head coach George Karl seemed to intensify this weekend, the hopes that he’ll become the team’s next head coach are quickly diminishing.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski from Yahoo! Sports, the Kings and George Karl are unlikely to reach a deal that will see him become the team’s head coach.

Right now, the Kings are using head coach Ty Corbin who replace the fired Mike Malone. According to Wojnarowski, if the Kings decide to pass on Karl and not hire him by Sunday night, they will continue to play this season with Corbin as they head coach and will assess the situation further this offseason.

George Karl is getting interest from the Orlando Magic as well, a team that currently has a head coach — their original head coach — in Jacque Vaughn but a firing seems imminent. Karl coming in right away would be a transition but it would be a smoother one than what we’re seeing in Sacramento.

There’s also the chance that no one hires Karl until the offseason, but one way or another is appears there is going to be resolution with Sacramento and Karl by the end of the weekend.
