ESPN’s Dan Dakich and Champaign, Ill mayor Don Gerard had a war of words on Twitter over Illinois guard Jaylon Tate’s technical foul on Saturday.

Illinois guard Jaylon Tate received a technical foul during his team’s Saturday contest against Michigan State for a very physical box of Travis Trice after a free throw.

ESPN’s Dan Dakich tweeted about the play and was not too happy with Tate, believing it to be a dirty move from the guard.

As Dakich’s mentions showed, fans of Illinois were not pleased with his analysis. Among them: Champaign, Ill maor Don Gerard.

Only on Twitter can one see a mayor and a sports reporter have a juvenile war of words that includes name-calling. It really is a magical place.

Illinois ultimately won the game 59-54, making the anger and ensuing Twitter war over a Fighting Illini technical call that much more absurd.
