Fantasy Basketball: Time To Pick Up Spencer Hawes

With the injury to the L.A. Clippers Blake Griffin, is it time to pick up Spencer Hawes?

In a word, yes. Yes, it is time to pick up Spencer Hawes. Of course Hawes does not have the upside that Blake Griffin does, but he should see around 35 or more minutes, at least though the All-Star break. If you own Griffin, it will be a must to add Hawes as the initial reports are foggy, but suggest that Griffin could be out 4-6 weeks.

We have seen Hawes carry some nice value the last few years when he gets plenty of run, and with his ability to knock down a few threes, he could serve to stretch the floor pretty nicely over the next month. In speculation, I could see Hawes averaging 15-16 points with 4-5 rebounds and around 2 three-pointers a game. Hawes should be a really nice pick up in a cats league, as he will bring value in the 3 point shots category. According to BasketballReference.com he could average 13 points with 8.3 rebounds and 1.7 threes per 36 minutes of playing time.

Another player I will expect to see a bump in value will be Matt Barnes. Today Barnes nearly doubled his average output in points and brings a toughness to the game that Hawes does not have. Doc Rivers will have his hands full trying to replace Griffin’s nearly 23 points a game. There is a slight chance that we could see Glen ‘Big Baby’ Davis pick up some value in this time while Griffin is out. He left today’s game with back spasms and is being considered day-to-day in advance of Monday’s tilt with the Dallas Mavericks.

You can consider adding Davis in a very deep league, but the upside is simply not very much with Davis. If Davis is unable to go, then Ekpe Udoh would see a bump in minutes, but neither guy is one to get excited over or expect much from.

As far as the daily league scene goes, I would not even get real excited about Spencer Hawes. Hawes will most likely have some bumps in the road and his value will likely be hard to predict. I would expect some inconsistency as to where some nights he could break out and have a huge game and the next night he could be a huge liability. I would also expect that the masses will be en route to use him, which makes it even harder to win with him.

So Hawes will not win you your league, but if you are a Blake Griffin owner, he might keep you from losing it. I don’t expect huge things from Hawes, but he will be a must-own player across all formats for as long as Blake Griffin is out. Once Griffin makes his return, then Spencer Hawes will be someone you can drop immediately. Until then though, feel free to insert him into your lineups and hope for the best.
