The New York Knicks have their eyes on Tobias Harris, but the likelihood that he’s acquired before the trade deadline is unlikely at best.

This has not been a kind season to the New York Knicks but it’s one in which they’re going to get better from regardless. You have to hit rock bottom before you truly understand loss — as Tyler Durden once asserted — and that’s where the Knicks are.

Phil Jackson is dumping fuel overboard, as he’s traded away J.R. Smith, Iman Shumpert and looks to be ready to buyout Amare Stoudemire. One thing he may not be willing to do though is deal a first round pick to land Tobias Harris before the trade deadline passes.

According to Steve Kyler from Basketball Insiders, the Knicks are unlikely to make a deal that lands them Tobias Harris any earlier than the offseason.

There have been rumors of Harris heading north from Orlando to play for the New York Knicks, but any deal that brings him there would be done in the offseason. Of course, Harris is a restricted free agent which means the Knicks run the risk of having his offer sheet matched by the Magic this summer. That’s where a trade would come into play, but giving up a first rounder for Harris is obscene given how getable he could be this offseason.

If the Knicks miss out on Harris in restricted free agency, then they’ll still have their first rounder and will also have cap space to pursue other deals — so it’s not as if their entire offseason strategy hangs on getting Harris.
