The Arizona Cardinals will look at signing free agent defensive lineman Michael Sam this offseason, according to head coach Bruce Arians.
Bruce Arians and the Arizona Cardinals were one of the best teams in the NFL all season long, but ran into some bad luck at the end of the season. Both starting quarterback Carson Palmer and backup quarterback Drew Stanton injured their knees and that left the Cardinals without a legitimate starting quarterback heading into the playoffs.

There are plenty of holes on the roster that the Cardinals will need to fix, but Arians already mentioned one name that the team will take a look at when free agency opens up.
Arians told OutSports.com that the Cardinals will take a look at free agent defensive lineman Michael Sam this offseason. He made history during 2014 for being the first openly gay player to play in the NFL.
Many thought that there would be some issues in the locker room with a gay player being brought onto a team. Sam didn’t stick around in St. Louis with the Rams, and didn’t make much news when he signed with the Dallas Cowboys either.
That exact question was directed at Arians, and he talked about what impact, if any, a gay player would have on the locker room.
“I don’t think the locker room would have any problem with it,” Arians said. “The problem would be with the fans. I think especially opposing fans. Some of the things that are said are over the top and out of control that I can imagine what some fans would say to an openly gay player.”
Sam showed some potential during preseason action with the Rams, and many thought that he would end up sticking with the team. That didn’t end up happening due to the talent that they already had on the defensive line, but he still has a good chance to make an NFL roster this offseason. He has a great work ethic and is a very humble player that is willing to learn.
Obviously this piece of news makes the offseason even more interesting and will bring the media flocking back to the Sam situation. Arizona already has a very talented defense, but they would be a nice landing spot for Sam.
Expect to hear more about this in the coming weeks as the offseason continues to heat up. The Cardinals likely won’t be the only team to show interest in Sam, and only time will tell whether or not Sam gets a new NFL contract.
