Tampa Bay QB Mike Glennon intrigues some teams as a potential trade candidate

As the NFL offseason begins, Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Mike Glennon has been generating some buzz as a trade candidate.

This is actually the second straight offseason in which Glennon has been rumored to be on the trade block. After the Bucs signed Josh McCown, the team dangled Glennon in trade talks, but nothing came of it.

The 6’7″ Glennon, 25, was chosen in the third round of the 2013 draft out of North Carolina State, and became the starter during the 2013 campaign, replacing the deposed Josh Freeman.

He has 18 NFL starts to his name now (13 in 2013 and 5 in 2014), in which he has thrown for 4,025 yards, 29 touchdowns, and 15 interceptions, good for a passer rating of 83.7.

Glennon was in part a victim of regime change in Tampa Bay, as he was drafted during Greg Schiano’s time as head coach, and was pushed out of the starting role when Lovie Smith and Jason Licht came in.

“I think this is a guy that certainly, as long as he continues on this trajectory, is a guy you’d love to have as a quarterback for a long time,” Schiano said of Glennon.

Of course, what Schiano said about Glennon counted for much less after he was fired, and the Bucs moved forward with McCown this season.

Smith declared that Glennon was the team’s “quarterback of the future,” but either that was completely untrue or Smith has no idea what a franchise quarterback is, as Glennon spent much of the season glued to the bench. Despite the 2-14 Bucs’ dismal season, Smith insisted on sticking with the veteran Josh McCown over the second-year Glennon, so it’s unlikely Glennon has any future with the team now that they have the first pick in the draft.

Glennon earned Offensive Rookie of the Month honors in November 2013, and became the first rookie in NFL history to throw at least one touchdown pass in his first eight games.

The Pewter Report’s Scott Reynolds believes Licht would settle for a third-round pick but no less than a fourth-rounder in return for Glennon.

Considering the weak crop of quarterbacks available on the free agent market (Brian Hoyer is probably the headliner), it’s no surprise that Glennon has generated some interest. Teams looking for new quarterbacks should include the Browns, Titans, Jets, and Bills, among others.
