ESPN messes up Brett Favre’s name in news report

ESPN messed up Brett Favre’s name by calling him “Brett Farve” in a news report on him returning to the Green Bay Packers to get his jersey retired in 2015.

Brett Favre and the Green Bay Packers are set for a reunion during the 2015 season, in which the Packers will be retiring Favre’s No. 4 jersey. It is a huge step for the organization and Favre to reunite after a very brutal end to his playing career.

Unfortunately, ESPN made a huge mistake in their coverage of the news and misspelled Favre’s name as “Farve.”

That type of mistake is exactly what will cost someone their job. It is an easy mistake to make due to the pronunciation, but any knowledgeable sports fan knows the proper spelling, and one would think that the Worldwide Leader in Sports would get that spelling correct.

More from Green Bay Packers

Favre’s career with the Packers ended with a trade to the New York Jets. They got tired of his constant retire and come back return, and decided that it was time to move forward with Aaron Rodgers under center. Obviously that decision ended up being proved right, and Rodgers has turned into the NFL’s best quarterback and reigning MVP.

After his tenure with the Jets, Favre alienated himself from the Packers’ fan base by signing to play with their bitter rival Minnesota Vikings.

Despite the bad end to Favre’s career with the Packers, he still has a place in quite a few fans’ hearts. He put up huge numbers with Green Bay, and led them to quite a bit of success including a Super Bowl win over the New England Patriots.

During his 20-year NFL career, Favre ended up throwing for 71,838 yards, 508 touchdowns, and 336 interceptions. He had a couple good seasons after he left Green Bay, but for the most part his success came with the Packers.

It is good to see the two sides finally work something out and to see Favre agreeing to head back to where his fame began. There is no question that he is a Packer at heart, and this is how it should be. The game that Favre has his jersey retired will be a game that every fan will want to attend or watch.

All of that being said, ESPN cannot be let off the hook for making that type of spelling error. Those type of issues happen all the time in sports media, but coming from ESPN it is an even bigger mistake.
