One fan with a tremendous sense of humor and help up a hilarious sign at a Washington Capitals game.

The game of hockey is a tremendous game. It’s fast-paced, intense, physical, exciting and creative. However, one stigma that has stuck with the game of hockey for years is that it is predominantly played by people of white ethnicity.

Not sure exactly why that is, but that is a whole different discussion that we won’t even attempt to get into.

Although, tell that to Willie O’Ree, Anson Carter, Joel Ward, Jarome Iginla, Wayne Simmonds, P.K. Subban, Mark Fraser, Trevor Daley, Ryan Reaves and Dustin Byugflien. Apparently, they didn’t get the memo.

During Sunday night’s game between the Philadelphia Flyers and the Washington Capitals, one fan in attendance decided to have some fun with the stereotype.

The two people to his right with the Flyers jerseys on are probably the people he came with, since they are the only ones who seem to be laughing at what the sign says. That, or they’re the only people around that get the joke.

Maybe the other people around are afraid to laugh, thinking they may seem racist. Loosen up, people. It’s a joke.

Ironically, this gentleman decided to do this at a game between the Flyers and the Capitals. Its ironic because both teams actually have an African-American player on their respective teams, and both are pretty good players too. The Capitals have Joel Ward, who has been in the NHL since 2006 and is a one-time 20-goal scorer. The Flyers have Wayne Simmonds, who is a very skilled and gritty player. He scored 29 goals and 60 points for the Flyers last season and it seems he’ll come somewhat close to those numbers again this season.

We are seeing a bit more African-American players break into the NHL now, and they’re not just gritty players. There’s New York Rangers prospect Anthony Duclair, who was a 50-goal scorer in the QMJHL and a standout for Team Canada at the 2015 World Junior Championships. There’s Edmonton Oilers prospect Darnell Nurse, who is a tremendous athlete and a big defenseman who can also put up big offensive numbers.

Hockey will always be a predominantly white sport, so to speak, but we are seeing a bit more diversity in the NHL today. It’s good to see some people having fun with it, at least.

Seeing this sign was hysterical.
