San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich recorded his 1,000th career win as an NBA coach with a 95-93 victory over the Indiana Pacers.
Gregg Popovich is one of, if not the best head coach in the NBA. He has led the San Antonio Spurs to a lot of success during his tenure with the team and they are on their way to yet another good season once again this year. Tonight, he picked up the 1,000th win of his career with a 95-93 victory over the Indiana Pacers.
There couldn’t have been a better game for Popovich to pick his 1,000th career win up in, as the Pacers gave everything they had all night long. Indiana hasn’t been a quality basketball team all year-long, but they were on a three-game winning streak up until tonight’s game. George Hill had a look at the game-winner, but he was just off.

Needless to say, Popovich has had an amazing career with the Spurs. He 1,000-462 career record with Spurs and has won five NBA championships with the Spurs as well.
At 66 years of age, Popovich still has a couple good years of coaching left in him before he decides to retire. He has been coaching Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, and Manu Ginobili for quite some time, and when they leave it will be hard for him to stick around. That being said, his love for the game could keep him around longer than most would expect.
It was right that the win would happen on the road against Indiana, as it is somewhat of a homecoming for Popovich. He was born on January 28th, 1949 in East Chicago, Indiana. Coming back to his birth state for this type of milestone is a fitting situation.
San Antonio is looking to make one more run at another championship with their currently big three. They are the reigning championship after dominating the Miami Heat last year in the NBA Finals, but age has shown much more this season than it has in years past.
All of that being said, tonight was a historical night for both Popovich and the Spurs and he is very deserving of the milestone. Expect to see the Spurs continue playing excellent, fundamental basketball as long as Popovich is their head coach. There aren’t many coaches that command the respect of their players and help build them up as men off-the-court like Popovich does.
Even when he decides to retire, Popovich will not be forgotten and will go down as one of the best head coaches in the history of basketball.
