A review of an incredible game between Liverpool and Tottenham
Tottenham traveled to Anfield today knowing a win would send them seven points clear of Champions League rivals Liverpool. However that was not to be the case as the Red’s ran out of the game 3-2 winners, placing them one point behind Spurs and three points off fourth place.
It was an incredible game between the rivals right from the beginning. The tempo was extremely high from start to finish, with the game ending in dramatic fashion.
The opening goal of the game came on the 15th minute when Tottenham’s Hugo Lloris failed to keep out Lazar Markovic’s left footed shot. The French goalkeeper will be disappointed not to have saved it, blaming a bobble.
After the goal Liverpool were pushing for a second when Tottenham got one against the run of play. The man of the moment Harry Kane capitalized on a Sakho slip and the English striker banged home his fifth goal in three games.

Both teams continued to push forward on the counter attack to finish out the first half, but it would be the 53rd minute before either would hit the back of the net again. Liverpool’s Daniel Sturridge, who had a great game considering it was his first start in five months, was taken down for a penalty. Liverpool’s captain Steven Gerrard stuck the penalty away despite Lloris getting a hand to it.
Tottenham pushed forward in hopes of an equalizer, eventually scoring thanks to some poor defending from Liverpool. Mignolet did well to save the initial shot which fell to Harry Kane, the earlier scorer had the composure to square the ball and it was bundled home by Dembele.
The match seemed to be ticking away for a draw with a lot of substitutes breaking up the pace of the game. The game became scrappy and either team could have pushed forward for the winner. It was two Liverpool substitutions that combined to break the deadlock, Adam Lallana made a great run to get behind the Tottenham defense before squaring the ball to a thankful Mario Balotelli.
It was the Italian’s first Premier League goal for Liverpool, and his first in the league since scoring for Man City back in 2012. Liverpool fans will no doubt be breathing a sigh of relief after the striker finally found the net.
It was clear to see what the game meant to the home side as the fans, players, and manager all celebrated like it was a cup final. Whatever happens at the end of the season, we will probably be able to look back at this game as one of the best the year produced. End to end stuff for 90 minutes with plenty of drama and a late finish.
