After previous speculation that the 2017 All-Star game would be going to DC, it looks like baseball’s best will be taking their talents to South Beach.
According to the Miami Herald, the Miami Marlins have won the bid to host the All-Star game in 2017. The team hasn’t announced it yet, but all indications point to the fact that they beat out the Washington Nationals for the mid-summer classic in two seasons.

Once upon a time, All-Star games were special. It was the one time all season long which placed the best of the best in the game on one field together. Kids and adults of all ages loved it.
Think about what one of the golden ages of Major League Baseball looked like at the All-Star game. In 1955 we saw an All-Star game that featured legends like Yogi Berra, Mickey Mantle, Ted Williams, Al Kaline, Duke Snider, Ernie Banks and Duke Snider.
What was so special on top of that ridiculous fantasy-like lineup was the fact that watching games was a novel idea. Remember, not every game was televised. Fans could only watch their home teams during the regular season, and never had a chance to watch superstars that played out West.
More than that was the fact that there was no inter-league play. Only the World Series and All-Star game featured AL and NL players on the same field at once. With technology came the ability to watch any player at any time, regardless of time or geographical region.
The All-Star game has simply lost it’s once special appeal.
Luckily for baseball though, their version trumps the other three major sports. The NBA All-Star game features tomfoolery with guys chucking balls up off the scoreboard; the NHL All-Star game is at the point where taking the goalie completely out of the game is a necessary thought; and the NFL Pro Bowl is a complete farce.
Goofy ideas like Fantasy Drafts and ridiculous jerseys are making us suffer even more.
Baseball though, is the only game in town during the summer and for the Miami Marlins in 2017, they’ll be the center of the sports world.
