It isn’t a deep trade market this season as big name players like Rajon Rondo, J.R. Smith and Timofey Mozgov have already been traded. There was no chance for the Hornets to land Dion Waiters and they can’t consider Lance Stephenson because they already have him and don’t want him.
According to Adrian Wojnarowski from Yahoo! Sports, the Minnesota Timberwolves and Charlotte Hornets have made a deal to swap Mo Williams and Troy Daniels for Gary Neal and a second-round pick.
There was a lot of talk about whether or not the Timberwolves would make a deal this season, as they seemed content on waiting out offers despite having solid veteran contracts to trade. One thing about rebuilding though — particularly in a market like Minnesota — is it’s hard to get veteran free agents to sign if you have no other veterans.
That’s why it might be that the Wolves don’t trade Thaddeus Young, but it certainly isn’t a notion that stopped them from moving Mo Williams.
Charlotte needed to make this trade, and it’s one that doesn’t salvage their season but it’s a move that certainly shows their seriousness about pushing for the playoffs. Right now, the Hornets sit at 22-29 and are the seventh seed in the Eastern Conference playoff picture.
Acquiring Mo Williams is a huge boost to their confidence and it’s a trade that could help them stay in the playoff hunt long enough to lock up a spot.
