The Charlotte Hornets are looking to acquire an upgrade at the point guard position and could very well be interested in Minnesota Timberwolves’ point guard Mo Williams.

Mo Williams has been a key piece for the Minnesota Timberwolves this season, but they aren’t a playoff contender and are looking to move him. The Charlotte Hornets are reportedly a potential destination for him prior to the February 19th trading deadline and are searching for an upgrade at the point guard position.

Charlotte would be very wise to make a move to acquire a player like Williams. They could use some scoring help in the back-court and adding his veteran experience would help them in a big way down the stretch of the season.

During the offseason, the Hornets were expected to be one of the legitimate playoff contenders in the Eastern Conference. They had an excellent duo last year in Al Jefferson and Kemba Walker, but both of those players have had injury issues throughout the season thus far. Lance Stephenson signing was another move that was expected to help them, but he has been nothing short of a disaster.

Acquiring a player like Williams could help turn some of those mistakes around. He has shown the ability to score and make plays for his teammates this year and the Hornets have a major need for a dual-threat point guard like that.

So far this season in 41 games played, Williams has averaged 12.2 points, 6.4 assists and 2.4 rebounds per game. He has shot 40.3 percent from the floor overall and 34.7 percent from behind the three-point arc. Those shooting numbers are down a bit due to the volume of shots that he has been asked to put up this year on a team that isn’t close to being a playoff contender.

At 32 years of age, Williams has a few good years of basketball left in him. He is on a one-year contract, but would likely be open to signing a long-term deal if a contending team acquires him,.

All of that being said, the February 19th deadline is coming up very quickly and is expected to be very busy. There are quite a few big names that are on the market and a lot of rumors flying around already.

Expect to see Williams traded prior to the deadline. The Hornets are a very good bet, as they desperately need to make a move if they want to make the postseason.
