A movie based on a popular ‘Assassin’s Creed’ video game series has entered production according to game developer Ubisoft.
Oh, the video game movie. It’s one of Hollywood filmmakers’s favorite ways to exercise their brazen hubris. Rarely, are video game movies ever successful. And even if they are successful they are almost never good. Take the infamous Mario Bros. Movie from 1993.
You would think that basing a movie off of what is arguably the most successful video game franchise of all time would be a good idea right? Well, you’d wrong. Dead wrong. As dead as a Koopa that just got jumped on. Despite being a box office bomb, making that movie was so soul sucking that John Leguizamo (who played Luigi in the film) has said in interviews that he and co-star Bob Hoskins would just get plastered between takes.
So that brings us to Assassin’s Creed. Highly successful video game franchise, with a solid story, and purposeful direction. How badly can it possibly go?

With Ubisoft’s recent announcement that the big screen adaptation of the game has officially entered production and will start shooting soon, fans are left crossing their fingers and praying that all will go well for the film.
The movie will be produced by New Regency and 20th century Fox, and though it has officially been greenlit, not much is known about the project beside the fact that X-Men: Days of Future Past star Michael Fassbender will be starring in the lead role. The movie will also be directed by Justin Kurzel who had previously worked with the well-endowed star in the upcoming movie adaptation of Macbeth.
All this has to make a fan wonder how they will treat the film’s source material. Considering the first game takes place in the medieval Middle East and whose main character is subsequently not an Irish dude, it begs the question on how they will go about telling the story of the ancient league of assassins. Last year, Fassbender went on record to say that the Assassin’s Creed film will “respect the game.” From IGN:
"“There’s so much cool stuff in the game that we’re actually spoiled for choice in terms of what we can use and what we can’t, but we also want to bring new elements to it and perhaps our own version of things that already exist in the game, but we’re definitely making a feature film, and we’re approaching it as a feature film, as opposed to approaching it as a video game.”"
For what it is worth, fans can rest assured that Fassbender knows what he’s talking about. The actor is known for starring in some of the most high quality movies and acting roles in the past few years including 12 Years a Slave and Inglorious Basterds, so there should be no doubt that he thought carefully when reading the script.
Along with the Assassin’s Creed movie, Ubisoft also has a few other irons in the fire including films based off of Far Cry, Watch Dogs, and Splinter Cell. One of those has got to be a winner. Right?
