Sacramento Kings remove Ty Corbin as head coach
By Josh Hill
In a move that is the last domino to fall in the George Karl saga, the Sacramento Kings have removed Ty Corbin as interim head coach of the team.
The Sacramento Kings are in the final stages of hiring George Karl to be their new head coach, which required the team to remove the man currently holding the position.

In what could have been a sticky situation, the Kings are hiring Karl without firing anyone from the coaching staff. That seems hard to wrap your head around but then again that’s just the Kings in general. Ty Corbin replaced Mike Malone earlier this season when Malone was fired. To make way for Karl to take the job, Corbin has been ‘removed’ as head coach — a job he wasn’t contracted to have anyways.
In a statement announcing the removal — which isn’t a firing — Kings GM Pete D’Alessandro noted that he still has the utmost respect for Corbin and is keeping him within the organization.
"“I have the utmost respect for Tyrone as a coach and person. He’s a man of great integrity, a consummate professional that managed a difficult situation with class and professionalism. I look forward to continuing to work with Tyrone moving forward.”"
To be straight, Corbin isn’t being fired rather he’s being reassigned, which is similar but different. So much of the NFL offseason has seen coaches ‘parting ways’ with their team, most notably Jim Harbaugh and the San Francisco 49ers. This was a nice way of saying Harbaugh was fired, but the Kings reassigning Corbin is truly a reassignment rather than a nice way of kicking him to the curb
Because he wasn’t under contract as head coach, the Kings don’t have to fire Corbin to make way for Karl and Corbin has no real grounds to argue. He can refuse the reassignment and resign, but that’s not something any of the parties involved seem interested in doing.
It’s a weird situation, but everyone seems to have come out alright, which is more than a lot of other people can say of similar situations.
