New York Knicks superstar Carmelo Anthony can’t even lead his own city in jersey sales.
In even New York City can Carmelo Anthony can lead in popularity. The New York Knicks star forward still trails The King in jersey sales in and around New York.
According to Fanatics, LeBron James is the leader of the pack in jersey sales in Melo’s area.
Here’s the Top 5:
- LeBron James
- Carmelo Anthony
- Stephen Curry
- Kevin Durant
- Derrick Rose
The popularity for James is obvious. He has been and still is the best player on the planet. Nobody has the all-around brilliance he possesses.

The rise for Curry is also an obvious one as he’s currently the front runner of fresh faces during this 2014-15 NBA season – probably the leader in the pack for MVP as well.
The real takeaway from this list is how fickle New York fans are at the moment.
Despite the Knicks having the worst record in the league at 10-43 and diving all-in to lead the association in tanking, owner James Dolan is still not being hurt where other franchises would suffer. The Knicks still have the fourth best attendance in the league at 19,812.
Madison Square Garden remains packed night after night, regardless of the D-League type starting lineup being thrown at them. As far as merchandise is concerned, it’s swayed a few fans.
Back in the 1990’s when guys like Patrick Ewing, John Starks, Charles Oakley and Anthony Mason played presented their rough and tumble ways, New York City was proud to rep their guys. The team took on the personality of the city and the city loved every minute of the great ride.
Were there Jordan jersey’s walking around during the 90’s? Sure. But not as many James jerseys as see now.
Either the Knicks futility over the past decade and a half has gotten the best of New Yorkers, or bandwagon jumpers are growing, Melo not leading the City in jersey sales is a major problem.
Let’s face it. The reason MSG can remain in the Top 5 in attendance with the Knicks being this dreadful is because it is still perceived to be “the place to be seen.” Stars line up in celebrity row and big-shots take clients out for a very expensive evening.
There are many posers roaming around the Garden these days, and the fact that LeBron has the top jersey in the Metropolitan area proves that point.
