The Jackie Robinson West Little League team received healthy cheers while attending a Chicago Blackhawks game on Friday.

Chicago Little League team Jackie Robinson West attended an NHL game on Friday between the Blackhawks and New Jersey Devils. When they were shown on the videoboard at the game, the crowd in attendance gave them a warm welcome. Fans cheered loudly and several even stood while applauding, when the team was shown during a break in the first period. The team sat in a suite area and the Blackhawks said they had arranged for the team to attend some months ago, according to a story by Sports Illustrated.

Little League International made the announcement on Wednesday that the Jackie Robinson West team officials included players who weren’t supposed to qualify for the team due to living outside of the set boundaries, which was a violation of regulations. The officials then worked at getting adjacent leagues to participate in the scheme. The Jackie Robinson West team was stripped of their Championship title that they won last summer.

Officials from the team have reportedly hired an attorney to investigate further into the matter.

The Jackie Robinson West team was the first all-black team to win the U.S. Championship, and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emmanuel plans to honor the team’s achievement in spite of having their title officially stripped away.

"“Mayor Emanuel believes it is unfair for the organization to have punished the children, who did nothing wrong,” a mayoral source told the Chicago Sun-Times. “These young men demonstrated tremendous character both on and off the field, and Chicago will honor them as the champions they are.”"

Emanuel had previously appealed to the Little League International president, hoping to get the title stripping reversed. He now plans to present the team with rings that he purchased through private donors shortly after they won the championship. The presentation will take place at the City Council hearing next month.

The rings bear the names of the players, jersey numbers and the number 42 in tribute to Jackie Robinson, the team’s namesake.
