The Los Angeles Lakers need to fix their franchise quickly, and Goran Dragic could be the answer — just not right now.

When the Los Angeles Lakers lost Kobe Bryant for the season — again — it was a true sign that the franchise is in the middle of a facelift period that is as painful as it is hard to watch.

More from Los Angeles Lakers

The Kobe era is over, and while he may hang on for a while it’s no longer going to be a team that is reminiscent at all of the teams he was once one. But the pieces to fix the Lakers are out there, they just need to be found and acquired. Goran Dragic is the subject of trade rumors but it appears he’s not going to be acquired by the Lakers — yet.

According to Marc Stein from ESPN, the Los Angeles Lakers are planning on chasing Goran Dragic with a max contract as opposed to trading for him this week.

"The Lakers, meanwhile, also have coveted Dragic for some time and likewise are said to be intent on testing the Suns’ resolve when it comes to their Slovenian point guard. Sources say L.A. plans to chase Dragic this summer anyway with an aggressive four-year offer that would be valued as high as an estimated $80 million if it approaches max-contract territory."

The Suns have extremely high demands for Dragic when it comes to trade offers as they want nothing less than a first-round pick for their guard. That’s a high price for the Lakers to pay, as they’ll have a lottery pick as well a few other draft picks moving forward to play with.

But Dragic is an unrestricted free agent this summer and the Lakers would be wise to hold off giving up assets now to acquire Dragic when they can get him then.

That’s the plan that makes the most sense though, as the Lakers need someone like Dragic to help them out and a deal this summer makes much more sense than a forced deal now.
