The Cleveland Cavaliers are looking to upgrade their backup point guard position, and Jameer Nelson appears to be one of their targets with the February 19th trade deadline coming up quickly.
LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers have begun picking their game up, but there are still some holes that need to be filled if they want to win a championship this season. One of those needs is an upgrade at the backup point guard position, and they have their eyes on Denver Nuggets point guard Jameer Nelson.

Nelson would be a perfect fit for the Cavaliers, and his veteran experience would fit in with the type of team that Cleveland is.
He has been traded two times already this year, but the third time would definitely be the charm for him. At 33 years-old, he still has a couple good years of basketball left in him. This would be the best chance for him to pursue a championship, and it would be a huge upgrade from having to play with the Nuggets for the remainder of the season.
During the 40 games that he has split between the Nuggets, Boston Celtics, and Dallas Mavericks, Nelson has had a very inconsistent season. Changing teams as much as he has isn’t easy for any player, but settling in Cleveland would be a perfect end for him. Nelson has averaged 7.5 points, 4.5 assists, and 2.6 rebounds per game.
Adding Nelson would also bring in another three-point shooter who could open up driving lanes. He has shot 37.2 percent throughout his career from behind the arc, and is a definite threat.
If the Cavaliers want to win a championship this season, they can’t afford to stand pat at the trade deadline. Matthew Dellavedova simply isn’t the type of backup point guard a championship contender needs. He is a talented player, but when it comes to an NBA Finals seven-game series he would likely end up being a liability rather than a help.
Expect to see the Cavaliers remain very active in trade talks ahead of the deadline, and don’t be surprised if they find a way to acquire Nelson from the Nuggets.
