Alex Smith is shocked to see what’s happened to his former team
Current Kansas City Chiefs and former San Francisco 49ers starting quarterback Alex Smith is about as stunned at anyone else at what has happened as of late with the regime of his former team.
While taking part in the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-AM on Saturday, Smith was asked about the state of the 49ers and he came right out and said he’s been a bit stunned to see what has happened.
“I think for me, it’s still just tough to believe all those guys are gone, all that turnover,” Smith said via the San Jose Mercury News. “I wasn’t there so obviously it’s hard for me to speculate on any of that. I was just kind of shocked. There were a lot of ballgames that got won over the last few years, but for whatever reason, they couldn’t make it work. I don’t know. I wish Coach Tomsula well. I wish him the best.”
Smith was the starting quarterback for the 49ers in the first year of the Jim Harbaugh era in 2011, where they made the first of three consecutive trips to the NFC Championship Game. The following year Smith suffered a concussion and the reins were eventually turned over to Colin Kaepernick. When his job was lost, Smith moved on to the Chiefs prior to the 2013 season.
Following this past season amid a lot of building tension, the 49ers and head coach Jim Harbaugh parted ways with one another and he was replaced a few weeks ago by offensive assistant Jim Tomsula.
