Fantasy Basketball: Will Gerald Henderson Stay Hot With Mo Williams?

Will Gerald Henderson stay hot when Mo Williams arrives in Charlotte?

Gerald Henderson had been a mostly forgotten fantasy basketball player this year. On the season he is averaging 11 points, 2.5 assists and 3 rebounds a game. The 27-year-old Duke product was also averaging a touch under 27 minutes a game. We have touched on how most players will need 30+ minutes a game to be worthy of ownership in standard size leagues.

Over the last 2 weeks and with the injury to Kemba Walker, Henderson has seen his averages rise sharply. For the last 15 days Henderson is scoring 16.5 points, 4.7 assists and 4.3 rebounds. You might think that the sole key is the absence of Walker, and that is part of it. His minutes though have risen to nearly 34 a game. Obviously the absence of Walker has led to the Hornets giving Henderson more minutes, and so far Henderson has taken advantage of the extra playing time.

The Hornets have now traded for and acquired Mo Williams and Troy Daniels from the Minnesota Timberwolves. Mo Williams should slot in right away as the starting point guard until Walker returns from injury and you can read up on our thoughts on the Williams acquisition by clicking here.

While Williams is a good player, he is obviously not the same caliber as Kemba Walker. I would expect that Henderson should be able to continue to carve out a similar role to what he is doing now.

A savvy fantasy owner can play Henderson as either a buy-low or a sell-high player. You could bill him with the fact that his stats will go down with the arrival of Williams or you could say that Williams is older, washed up, and will take too much time to learn the offense to become an effective fantasy option for the Hornets.

The fact for me is both guys should be equally attractive options and will likely both play a significant role on the team until Walker can return from his injury. I don’t expect either player to be the type to win or lose your league for you, but would pretty much consider both guys as must own players going forward until Walker returns.

Just like I always preach here the thing to do will be to watch the games, box scores, and the minutes distribution. Be ready to act accordingly if you see Henderson losing minutes. Be prepared to send him away via a trade or go out and snag the next available free agent. This is a very important time for fantasy basketball players as the waiver wire over the next week can make or break you in your quest for a fantasy basketball championship. There will very likely be a few more trades, and with these trades, players will lose and  gain value like the stock market. The owner who does not pay attention will pay the price by losing his league and losing out on the next hot free agent.
