NBA Trade Rumors: Celtics, Nuggets talking Ty Lawson trade

The Boston Celtics and Denver Nuggets are reportedly having preliminary trade discussions about point guard Ty Lawson.

Ty Lawson is available for trade at the right price, but the Denver Nuggets aren’t going to make a move just for the sake of making a trade. They will want to get some good young talent and draft picks in return, but there are teams out there that are more than capable of giving them the type of offer that they want.

According to a report from Grantland’s Zach Lowe, the Boston Celtics are having preliminary trade discussions about a trade involving Lawson.

Boston just traded away Rajon Rondo to the Dallas Mavericks earlier this season, which makes this news a bit more interesting. They would be getting a much more dangerous offensive option in Lawson, and at 27 years old he still has plenty of high level basketball left in him. Rondo was more of a passing point guard, and the Celtics need to have a legitimate number one scoring option moving forward.

Lawson is also the type of point guard that head coach Brad Stevens would love to work with. He is a quick, offensive minded player who is very open to being coached.

Depending on what the Celtics would have to give up in the deal, it would make a lot of sense for them to pursue Lawson. The Nuggets would likely want a future first-round pick in the deal, and the Celtics have plenty of young players to throw into the pot as well. Perhaps names like Jae Crowder, James Young, Avery Bradley, and Kelly Olynyk could come into play.

During the 2014 season, Lawson has averaged 16.9 points, 10.1 assists, and 3.2 rebounds per game. His shooting percentages have been up a bit at just 44.7 percent overall and 36.0 percent from behind the three-point arc.

His numbers show just how difficult he has been for opposing defenses to defend against. He is a true point guard with a deadly scoring ability, but he has figured out how to balance both of those skills.

Expect to hear Lawson’s name come up quite often throughout the course of the next couple days. The NBA trading deadline is coming up on Thursday afternoon, and teams like the Celtics and Nuggets are hoping to be very active.

Don’t be surprised if the Nuggets end up keeping Lawson through the deadline, but they won’t pass up a good offer if they feel that it’s fair.
