For any NFL fans that follow the NFL Draft, it is known that Mike Mayock is one of the most recognizable draft experts out there. In fact, most of the pre-draft events are aired on NFL Network, which is the platform Mayock works for. While many people may not be the biggest Mayock fan, it should be said that he has a ton of credentials and he truly is one of the best at what he does.
According to Chase Goodbread of NFL.com, Mayock compared Indiana’s Tevin Coleman to Darren McFadden out of the Oakland Raiders. Goodbread tweeted the comparison out earlier today.
When McFadden came into the league, he was a promising back with a skill set that could be of great use for an NFL team for many years. However, his durability issues ultimately led to him being in a committee over the past few years in Oakland. To show just how poorly McFadden’s health has been since entering the NFL in 2008, it should be said that McFadden has only played in every game in a season just once and that was in 2014 where he split carries with Maurice Jones-Drew. However, if Latavius Murray stayed healthy, McFadden would’ve had even less carries this past season.
At 6-foot-1, 210 pounds, Coleman’s size compares to McFadden, who is 6-foot-1, 220 pounds. Both have bigger frames and both have injury concerns. In his college career, Coleman had toe/feet surgery in December. McFadden has also had a plethora of injuries in both his collegiate and his professional career.
Both running backs also ran the football a ton in college. Nowadays, with running backs having shorter lifespans in the NFL, teams like their backs to not have a lot of wear-and-tear before entering the league. In Coleman’s collegiate career, he had 452 carries. In comparison, McFadden had 785 carries. Like McFadden, Coleman will come into this league with some wear-and-tear on his body and that’s not a good thing for his NFL potential.
Even though Coleman has the size for an every-down back and he looks the build to produce in a zone-blocking scheme, he is a back that relies more on his bruising ability than his speed. Given that his frame is a little narrow and he runs high, Coleman will be exposed to big hits at the next level. With that being said, Mayock’s comparison between Coleman and McFadden makes a ton of sense.
