A few hours after releasing Donnie Avery, the Kansas City Chiefs made another move to switch up their receiving corps in A.J. Jenkins.

In 2014, the Kansas City Chiefs receiving group did not score a single touchdown — not one. To be completely honest, the fact they didn’t have just one is not only ridiculous, but extremely alarming. In his two-year tenure with the Chiefs, Jenkins caught just 17 receptions. With the need to revamp the wide receiver group, the Chiefs made the smart decision by letting the 2012 NFL first-round pick walk.

KCChiefs.com reported the news of the waiving.

Despite being seen as a project when the San Francisco 49ers drafted him out of Illinois in 2012, Jenkins was seen as a guy who could take over one of the starting receiver positions in San Francisco when Anquan Boldin retired. However, because Boldin kept playing at such a high level, Jenkins ultimately fell out of flavor in San Francisco and he was swapped before the 2013 season for Jonathan Baldwin, who also was struggling to see the field for the Chiefs. Well looking back on the trade, no one was a winner as both failed to make much of an impact in their careers.

Eric Branch, who covers the 49ers for the San Francisco Chronicle talked about the deal and how no one was a winner in the end and neither quite panned out in their careers.

Despite Jenkins being released, you have to wonder which teams will be willing to take a chance on him. There was a reason he was drafted in the first round and although he has yet to shown that first-round potential, Jenkins will likely get brought in on a one-year deal and if he does anything to contribute, Jenkins could very well be on the fast track to turn his career around.

With Jenkins and Avery no longer on the roster, the Chiefs are now down to five receivers. However, the only one who will surely be back on this roster in 2015 is Dwayne Bowe. It’s no secret that the Chiefs want to address the wide receiver position. By releasing Avery and waiving Jenkins, the Chiefs seem to have their eyes set on choosing a wide receiver in April’s draft.
