Phoenix Suns guard Goran Dragic has informed the team that he will not be re-signing with the team in the offseason.

Goran Dragic will not be re-signing with the Phoenix Suns this offseason, which dramatically changes the situation that the Suns are in when it comes to trading him away at the deadline. Before tonight, the hope was that the Suns would find a way to re-sign Dragic this summer — but the guard has killed that notion.

With no leverage in contract talks, or at the very least the immediate threat that Dragic will walk at the end of the season, the Suns now need to look to the trade market to get return for him.

What this means is that the Suns will more than likely be trading Dragic before the deadline arrives, as reported by Marc Stein from ESPN.com:

This comes after a report from Adrian Wojnarowski at Yahoo! Sports, Goran Dragic has informed the Suns he will no be signing a new deal in the offseason.

It’s hard to see Phoenix with much leverage in this matter, as they can’t rely on re-signing Dragic and they can’t really hold ransom on him either. With knowledge that Dragic will walk at the end of the year, teams who may have paid a high price for him will come in with a much lower trade offer since they know he can be had over the summer for zero cost outside of a contractual one.

That puts Phoenix in a rough spot but it means resolution for Dragic by the end of the week.
