Seton Hall University has suspended guard Sterling Gibbs for two games for striking Villanova’s Ryan Arcidiacono in the face with his forearm, the school announced Monday.
The incident occurred when Seton Hall was trailing Villanova big in second half. Gibbs was clearly very frustrated with how the game against their bitter rivals was going and let his emotions get the better of him. Gibbs was given a flagrant foul and ejected from the game.
Just check out the incident and judge for yourself:
It’s a big loss for the Pirates, as Gibbs is their leading scorer, averaging 16.7 points per game this season. Also, with this most recent 80-54 loss to Villanova, the Pirates have now lost five straight games. They will have to find a way to win their next two games without their most productive offensive player.
Gibbs took to Twitter after the game to apologize for the incident.
Ryan Arcidiacono responded and accepted the apology.
Good for Gibbs for taking the initiative and apologizing for the incident and especially to Ryan. Also a classy move by Ryan to just forgive and move on.
Before this recent skid, it seemed like Seton Hall would be a team that belonged in the NCAA tournament. However, with this recent skid, they look to be on the outside looking in. Their next two games are against St. John’s and Creighton, and they are huge if the Pirates have any hopes of going to March Madness.
Gibbs will be eligible to return for the game against Providence on March 4th.
It’s a bold move by Seton Hall as they were the ones that suspended their own player, not the NCAA. Knowing the type of school Seton Hall is, I wouldn’t expect anything less. They hold integrity to the utmost importance, so there is no way they would let something like this just slide, no matter who it is.
