Mike Mayock: No one is making an RGIII trade for Jameis Winston or Marcus Mariota
By Josh Hill
Thanks to Robert Griffin III, there likely won’t be another blockbuster deal that sees a team move up to draft Marcus Mariota or Jameis Winston.
When the Washington Redskins traded away their future to land the No. 2 overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, many analysts told everyone to wait and see what would happen before truly grading the deal.

Well, we’ve all watched and waited with the deal and it has become abundantly clear that the Redskins made a terrible mistake in trading for RGIII. That’s a trade that will have residual effect on this year’s draft class, according to Mike Mayock from NFL Network.
According to Titans beat writer Jim Wyatt of the Tennessean, Mayock isn’t down on the top two quarterbacks in the draft but he doesn’t feel they’re special enough to warrant a team giving up it’s future to get them.
“Washington went and got the guy they thought could help them win a Super Bowl. Because of what’s happened with that kid, both with injuries and the way he’s played, I think a lot of teams are very nervous about the perception of mortgaging your future.”
Ever since the RGIII trade in 2012, teams are going to tread lightly when it comes to giving up future draft picks to swing for the fences with a selection. RGIII may still pan out as a quarterback in the NFL but he is the furthest thing from home run at this point in his career.
Meanwhile, the Rams are building what could be a playoff team in 2015 with the picks they received in that trade, while the Redskins continue to fall further and further away from that position.
That’s something that is going to scare teams away from making that kind of a massive trade again, and it’s something that is going to lead to some shakeups in the draft. With no real threat of someone moving up for a blockbuster deal, that changes draft strategies and may lead to Mariota and/or Winston falling in the draft.
One thing is certain though — no one will be making the Redskins mistake twice.
