With the NBA trade deadline looming ever near—it is Thursday at 3 PM ET—the Dallas Mavericks are optimistic they can land one more player to add to an already talented roster.

More from Dallas Mavericks

The Mavericks made headlines in the player personnel area when they reached an agreement to bring in the freshly available Amar’e Stoudemire on Tuesday just a day after he was officially released by the New York Knicks.

According to RealGM.com, Stoudemire will make $477,150 for his services the remainder of this season. Stoudemire brings a load of experience to the Mavericks in their frontcourt—an area where they had grown a bit thin after trading away their best bench frontcourt player, Brandan Wright, in their deal with the Boston Celtics for Rajon Rondo in December.

To make room for Stoudemire the Mavericks waived guard Ricky Ledo.

Yet even with the addition of Stoudemire, Dallas remains interest in acquiring another body, though no names have surfaced as to just who that player may be.

Earl K. Sneed of Mavs.com tweeted Wednesday of this idea.

With Stoudemire expected to primarily fill a backup center role behind former teammate Tyson Chandler, the Mavericks could still be looking for a player to backup 13-time All-Star Dirk Nowitzki at power forward.

The 35-year-old Nowitzki is averaging just shy of 30 minutes per game this season, but is still putting up remarkable numbers for a Mavericks offense which is not quite as reliant as they have been on him in recent seasons.

In a perfect Mavericks-centered world, veteran David West would be that man. West’s name has been floated by many as an available player in trade talks for teams looking to beef up their frontcourt. West is an excellent pick-and-roll player, which was the main reason Stoudemire elected to join Dallas as he likes Dallas’ pick-and-roll offense.

The Indiana Pacers are likely hesitant to move West, though, given the expected early return of star wing Paul George. The Pacers are currently out of the playoff mix, but with a healthy George could challenge for one of the final playoff spots in the Eastern Conference.

Of course acquiring West would require a handsome return, one the Mavericks may not be able to match while still bolstering their overall depth. Thus, it is more likely that any deal would be for a bench player who mostly provides depth, and is not a big name.
