The NFL salary cap for the 2015 season will reportedly be at least $1.5 million higher than previously projected.

It seems that NFL teams will have a bit more wiggle room than previously projected heading into free agency on March 10.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the NFL has notified teams that the 2015 salary cap will be between $140 and $143 million, which is at least $1.5 million higher than previously projected.

We’ve seen the NFL salary cap rise dramatically in the past two years. Last year, we saw the salary cap rise from $123 million in 2013 to $133 million. Now, for 2015, it may rise another $10 million.

I’m sure all the teams will welcome the increase in cap space, but it will really help teams that are currently in bad cap situations.

The New Orleans Saints, Arizona Cardinals, New England Patriots, Pittsburgh Steelers and St. Louis Rams are all spending above the current cap, while the Kansas City Chiefs, San Francisco 49ers and Miami Dolphins all have less than $2 million in cap space.

The Jacksonville Jaguars, Oakland Raiders, Cleveland Browns, New York Jets and Tennessee Titans are among the teams with the most cap space. They all have over $40 million in cap space, with Jacksonville having the most with over $61 million in cap space.

As is the case every year, some teams will be faced with some tough decisions on whether to keep certain players or release them to free up cap space. Some of those names this year will be Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald, Patriots defensive tackle Vince Wilfork, and Kansas City Chiefs Tamba Hali.

All three teams are in bad cap situations and will need to address other problem areas within the team.

We’re seeing more and more bloated contracts given out, especially to quarterbacks. Just look at Joe Flacco’s contract that he was offered after the Baltimore Ravens won the Super Bowl. I think that’s a major reason why we’ve seen such a drastic increase in the salary cap over the past few years.
