Denver Nuggets point guard Ty Lawson missed practice for an unknown reason Wednesday. Denver coach Brian Shaw is looking into the matter.

The Denver Nuggets’ nightmarish season continued on Wednesday.

Nuggets point guard Ty Lawson was a no-show at the team’s first practice since the all-star break with an unexcused absence.

Denver coach Brian Shaw spoke to the Denver Post about the matter and was clearly not pleased with Lawson’s absence.

“We had a week off or nine days between games, and you expect everybody to be here,” Shaw said. “It disrupts the planning of everything, in terms of you count on somebody in practice. But he’s not here so we had to go without him.”

“When we had the coaches meetings this morning, all of the other guys came in and did their shooting,” Shaw said. “And we (the coaches) came up right at the start of practice at 11 o’clock and that was the first that I noticed that he wasn’t there.”

It’s not clear if Lawson will be punished.

“I know that there’s things that happen,” Shaw said. “Guys went all different directions after the last game, against (the L.A. Lakers). … I don’t know what the issues are, the travel issues. I haven’t talked to anybody on that subject yet.

Considering that Lawson’s name has been in trade rumors, that he was arrested in January for a DUI and that the team just had significant time off due to the all-star break,  the Nuggets point guard could not have picked a worse time to miss a practice.

But this latest issue is symbolic of Denver’s season: just when it seems it can’t get worse, it does. The Nuggets, who entered the season with playoff aspirations, are 20-33.

It sure will be interesting to see how Denver handles the matter if it finds out Lawson’s absence was preventable and not the result of a freak circumstance.

The 27-year-old is Denver’s best player; he’s averaging 16.9 points (44.7 percent shooting from the field, 36.0 percent shooting from beyond the arc), 10.1 assists and 1.3 steals per game.

Lawson, who was a first-round pick in the 2009 NBA Draft out of North Carolina, has spent his entire career with the Nuggets.
