Little girl injured when Southern Illinois mascot doesn’t see her coming

Few things in life intrigue me like the life of a mascot. Benny the Bull is my hero. When I was a college student at the University of Iowa, I dreamt of being Herky the Hawkeye who clearly had it going on and got all the girls.

What I didn’t realize and am now finding out, these jobs are dangerous.

Check out what happened to the Southern Illinois mascot who seemingly does a great job most of the time representing the Salukis:

Since the announcer / coach is talking about getting great shots, I’m guessing this was after the game. Poor Saluki was just looking to wrap up his or her evening when a 5-7 year old shows up wanting a hug. Saluki goes down, so does the girl and now the likely 20 year-old in the costume will have to live with trampling a little girl for the rest of his mascot and real life. Tough look.

It is hard to define what a normal person is, but if you were able to, mascots would probably fall under the abnormal, weird category. They love to entertain, but are more comfortable doing it a warm, furry outfit while not being allowed to talk.

I do hear that some of these mysterious mascot folks are very popular with the ladies and men. So there is yet another plus in addition to getting to dance around in front of 2o or 20,000 folks, if that is your thing.

Here is hoping both the young girl and the mascot are alright. There is probably a parenting lesson in here too. Don’t go up to any mascot from behind. Their vision is not perfect and you may end up with a concussion rather than a picture, high-five or hug.

Now calling Southern Illinois University and applying for a possible opening.
