The San Francisco 49ers have made it clear that Vernon Davis will be back in 2015.
There wasn’t a more disappointing tight end in fantasy football and in the NFL last season than Vernon Davis. Whether it was his usage in the offense or his inability to connect with Colin Kaepernick, Davis was downright atrocious in 2014. With just one more season left on his contract, Davis will be set to make a base salary of $4,350,000. After that, Davis will be an unrestricted free agent. Even though the 49ers have a promising young tight end in Vance McDonald, their 2013 second-round pick, the 49ers have decided that Davis will in fact be with the team come 2015.

According to a report from San Francisco’s general manager Trent Baalke, Davis will absolutely be on the team next season. Granted a back injury suffered in the middle of the year was a big reason for his struggles, but to be completely fair to Davis, it’s definitely hard to play in a volatile situation like the one he played at last year in San Francisco.
Although Davis led the league in touchdowns in 2009 and he’s a two-time Pro Bowler, the fact of the matter is that with his downfall last year, the money San Francisco will owe him in 2015 may simply not be worth it. However, Baalke talked about Davis’ season in an interview CSN Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco.
“It was an off year. He realizes (that). The great thing about Vernon, he understands. He’s been in this business long enough and he’s worked hard enough, he understands where his level of play is and he still believes that he can have some great years ahead of him — as do we. And we look forward to having him a part of those.”
With Davis returning and Michael Crabtree likely leaving in free agency, the 49ers would benefit greatly if Davis returned to his 2009 self. Obviously, he’s getting older at the age of 31, but Davis can still be a game-changer if he gets the right motivation. To fully maximize their potential as an offense, expect the 49ers to address the wide receiver position in this year’s draft.
