Previous reports said Sanders’ buyout was finalized, but apparently that isn’t the case yet

Scratch that last story. Looks like Larry Sanders is still a Buck–for now.

Milwaukee and their power forward have been working on a buyout of his 4-year, $44 million contract, one that was reported to have been finished today. Now it appears that isn’t the case, according to this tweet from Gary Woelfel of the Racine Journal Times (Wis.).

It’s unknown at this point what caused the buyout negotiations to hit a snag, but as we can infer from that tweet it’s up to Sanders at this point.

From all we’ve heard about this situation with the Bucks and Sanders up to this point, it’s unlikely that he would actually want to stay in Milwaukee after being presented with the opportunity to be bought out and go to a team like Cleveland or Dallas. On the other hand, reports had indicated that Sanders would receive $14.5 million of the rest of his $33 million salary, so maybe he wants the whole thing. And it’s possible he wouldn’t be ready to go to a team at all, as he reportedly told the Bucks earlier this year that he “doesn’t want to play basketball anymore.”

Milwaukee is ready to be done with Sanders, who is talented but has come with more headaches than contributions lately; he has only played in 50 of a possible 135 games over the past two years.

Some of that was due to injury, but most was due to a bar fight that injured his thumb, multiple drug violations, and some time off this season for “personal reasons.” Sanders hasn’t played since January 18.

If Sanders is indeed bought out, the Mavericks have been closely connected to him, and Cleveland is among the other teams rumored to be interested.

The most likely outcome is still a buyout, but it’s not as sure a thing as it once was. This thing ain’t over yet.
