Denver Broncos president John Elway is claiming they will tag stud wide-out Demaryius Thomas if they’re forced to.

There’s some things that NFL players just cannot stand.

One is when their beloved Beats By Dre is taken away from them due to NFL contractual obligations. Another is when they’re getting destroyed on the field and they see a 15-yard flag thrown because a defensive end touched the quarterback’s helmet with his pinky finger.

Another thing NFL players cannot stand is Roger Goodell.

For all of those annoyances these athletes have to endure, it’s the dreaded Franchise Tag that gets some of their emotions going most.

Denver Broncos wide-receiver Demaryius Thomas might have that dreaded feeling coming his way soon.

According to Lindsay Jones of USA today, Broncos president John Elway is claiming that the team will in fact place the tag on Thomas if a deal isn’t reached by the March 2nd deadline.

It makes total sense from the Broncos point of view and making this announcement serves two purposes.

Peyton Manning is coming back for what might be the final season of his historic career and it would be plain silly to not have their most dangerous weapon back. Whether they can get a long-term deal done with Thomas remains to be seen, but at the very least Elway is notifying everybody that Thomas isn’t going anywhere.

The other purpose it serves is to put the ball in Thomas’ court.

Because football is such a one play and you’re done sport, and the nature of the contracts don’t guarantee much in comparison to other leagues, Thomas now knows he’ll be on a one year leash if his camp plays hardball with the contract.

The more his people push for a monster deal, the more he’ll have to play this next year out and pray a major injury doesn’t happen.

This is why the Franchise Tag is such a terrible thing for NFL players. While they laugh all the way to the bank with the money they accumulate during that one season, nothing is promised past that year.

The guaranteed contract with a massive signing bonus is always the professional football player’s number one incentive.

The 27-year old monster of a wide receiver is coming off a fantastic season which saw him grab a career best 111 balls for 1,619 yards and 11 touchdowns. Barring an unforeseen situation, Manning and newly minted head coach Gary Kubiak will have him at their disposal in 2015.
