New Broncos coach says he won’t confine Peyton Manning to his offense

The Broncos appear to be operating under the impression that Peyton Manning will return, at least according to some quotes from Gary Kubiak, the team’s new head coach.

According to the Houston Chronicle, in an article written by John McClain, Kubiak says he’s talked at length with Manning, saying that they’ll run “the Broncos offense.”

“Peyton can do whatever he wants,” added Kubiak. He was talking about freedom at the line of scrimmage, but let’s imagine for a second a world in which Peyton Manning can truly do whatever he wants. If Manning really had full authority over the Broncos, we’d see some changes:

  • First of all, Kubiak probably wouldn’t be the coach. It would be John Fox or Tony Dungy or Jim Caldwell and his half-mustache.
  • Papa John would be hired in some advisory role in the front office
  • The team would build a statue for Peyton, as well as his father Archie, his brother Eli, and his brother Cooper, who has the worst luck–imagine if everyone else in your family was a star NFL quarterback, and you weren’t. That’s got to hurt.
  • Peyton would also try to get some more pass-friendly rules passed by the NFL, such as “no cornerback is allowed to follow a receiver down the field.” This penalty would be called “stalking.” Also, “no defensive player may attempt to possess the football.”

Despite Kubiak’s talk of running the “Broncos offense” and his conversations with Manning, there’s still no guarantee that Manning will be back next year, as he has yet to make a decision on his future. According to previous reports, Manning is leaning heavily toward returning, and has had discussions with team officials to that effect, so it would seem that the most likely outcome is Manning returning to the Broncos in what could be his final season.

Before Kubiak’s press conference ended, he was asked if he believes that Joe Flacco is an elite quarterback, because that is the question that just won’t die.

“Heck yes,” said Kubiak.

OK, we got our “heck yes.” Now can we please stop talking about that?
