Will he or won’t he? Jameis Winston has yet to make an official decision on whether he’ll throw at the NFL Combine on Saturday or not. According to Albert Breer of NFL Network, the decision should come today. That’s after NFL Insider Ian Rapoport tweeted on Tuesday that a source told him that Winston will indeed throw at the Combine.
Earlier in the week, the rumored number one draft pick was reportedly not going to throw at the Combine. His quarterback coach George Whitfield Jr. called it a game time decision and he hadn’t made it on Monday. Usually that means the quarterback is not going to throw, and NFL.com analyst Gil Brandt offered his opinion to USA Today’s For The Win on that subject.
"“And what that usually means is instead of him having to put up with people like me and have to hear, ‘Don’t you think it’s in your best interest to throw because there’s gonna be 32 teams here to watch you? You’re going to have owners, general managers, you’re going to have head coaches…’ And to me, historically when a guy’s not going to do something, he’ll wait until the last minute and say, ‘Well, I just think it would be better for me to wait (until Pro Day).’”"
Other experts disagreed with Brandt’s assessment that it’s a wasted opportunity not to throw and said that Winston would be going into an unfamiliar environment and throwing to unfamiliar receivers, something that might not allow him to show his best stuff. Former quarterback and current analyst Brady Quinn said that he didn’t throw at the Combine due to an injury, but that he thinks it’s not an environment where quarterbacks are set up to succeed. Everything’s unfamiliar, from receivers to routes and everything in between. Quinn said the best thing you can do is try to look good with a decent outing.
Quinn added that FSU Pro Day is a better place for Winston to show off his strengths. He gets the familiar environment and everything else to help him succeed and impress scouts.
Aside from the throwing controversy, Winston has been in the news lately looking doughy during drills earlier in the offseason. His quarterback coach said that there was no problem with his level of fitness.
