Miami’s $325 million season
For the first time in over a decade, the Miami Marlins will actually be worth watching. At least, for the first week, or month of the season.
The rest depends on how they perform, especially after the Marlins gave their best player, Giancarlo Stanton over $300 million to be a Marlin for life, brought in Ichiro Suzuki (who fans are going to love), Mat Latos and Dee Gordon, and have a bright future in outfielder Christian Yelich and Jose Fernandez who’s set to return midway through the season.
What’ll be worth watching is if the Marlins can finish with a winning record for the first time since 2009 and if they can make a run at the NL wild card, especially given the fact that teams like San Diego, the Chicago Cubs and division rival Mets are all gunning for a spot in the postseason and all could take one of the two wild card spots.
Should the Marlins make it back to October, it’ll mark the first time since 2003 they would do so. For those who forget, 2003 was also the last time they won the World Series and the last time they made the playoffs before that was 1997, the first time they won the World Series.
So, in theory, all Miami has to do is make it to October.
