Jameis Winston is being evaluated for weakness in his throwing shoulder.
Welcome to the NFL combine where we are fascinated by how fast a player can run the 40 or how much someone can lift or how high someone can jump over any film that they put together on the field. Every player is over-analyzed to the max. One of the most significant things that can come out of it though is the medical status of players though.
Jameis Winston could be the top player taken in the draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but there might be a little snag on that plan. Winston is being evaluated for weakness in his throwing shoulder.

Winston had not missed a game in college during his two seasons with Florida State. He won the Heisman trophy and didn’t lose a game until the playoff last season. He has been working with QB guru George Whitfield to prep for the NFL draft and could be the top overall selection. Whitfield and Winston believed that his throwing shoulder was getting stronger and they didn’t see any signs of weakness.
“Never had any issues. Never had any surgeries,” Whitfield said Friday when informed of Mortensen’s report. “I don’t know what part they are looking at. I’m sure they are just making observations.
“I knew they were doing tests. It’s actually a little bit of a shock. He’s only been getting stronger. They test these guys like astronauts.”
“His velocity has been going up,” Whitfield said. “The last time he threw was Tuesday for just over 90 minutes. it’s certainly not anything that comes functionally and has hindered him.”
At this time, Winston still is expected to throw during the combine on Saturday. Teams will be examining every single throw that he makes on the field there. Will the weakness in his shoulder throw up a red flag for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and other teams in the league? Will Winston’s stock start to drop because of this little alert? We will have to keep an eye on what he does during his throwing session to see if there are any hints of a weak shoulder.
