The Philadelphia 76ers acquired JaVale McGee before the NBA trade deadline on Thursday, but they may end up keeping him and not buying out his contract.

The NBA trade deadline frenzy saw a handful of players switch teams, but not everyone is going to be staying put. The Utah Jazz are expected to buyout Kendrick Perkins, there are questions about Danny Granger at the moment and Thomas Robinson is already on the market after being bought out by the Denver Nuggets.

JaVale McGee seemed destined for the buyout market after being traded from the Nuggets as well, but the Philadelphia 76ers are holding off on making that move — for now.

According to Sixers beat writer Tom Moore, the team hasn’t yet decided what they’re going to do with McGee but it sounds like he’s going to be given his fair shot at being part of the team.

Of course, these are the 76ers we’re talking about and the team hasn’t really been known for their reliability in giving veterans contracts or keeping big money deals. Sam Hinkie has made a living off of doling out players for draft picks and cap space and the McGee move was primarily made for the first-round pick the team acquired.

But there is potential with McGee and he could be a nice part of a winning team in the future. The only question is will that winning team be in Philly or somewhere else.

The latter always seems to be more likely.
