Cam Newton has given the gift of a great player on a rookie contract to the Carolina Panthers, but they aren’t going to keep getting a bargain from him for much longer.

Cam Newton has been one of the best quarterbacks in the league ever since he was drafted, but he’s only had the 20th-biggest contract for quarterbacks in that time.

His contract has been quite the present for the Panthers, but they will soon have to pay the man what he deserves.

Joseph Person of the Charlotte Observer reported today that the Panthers and Newton are currently in talks of a contract extension.

Person reports that Newton’s representatives met with the Panthers today to discuss an extension, but he also says that Newton is in no rush to agree on a deal just yet.

The reason Newton isn’t worried about getting a deal right now is because of the upcoming deals of the other young star quarterbacks: Andrew Luck and Russell Wilson.

Wilson is expected to be the first quarterback to ever get a fully guaranteed deal, and Luck is expected to make $25 million per year which would make him the highest-paid player in the history of the game.

Although Newton won’t be offered those type of deals, Person believes he is seeking a deal in the second tier of quarterbacks like Matt Ryan and Joe Flacco who are making $20 million per year.

The Panthers picked up a team option for Newton’s fifth and final year of his deal before he becomes a free agent, and he will make $14.7 million this season.

Newton is soon to turn 26 years old, and he is coming off of a bit of a down year in which he completed only 58.5 percent of his passes for 3,127 yards, 18 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

He also added 539 yards and five touchdowns on the ground this past season.
