Sullinger suffered a stress fracture in his left foot in a win on Feb. 11 vs. the Atlanta Hawks, and didn’t play in the team’s loss to the Sacramento Kings this past Friday.
Sullinger told the Boston Herald he wasn’t too happy about sustaining the injury.
"“It sucks, honestly, especially with the type of push we’re trying to make,” Sullinger said after watching yesterday’s practice at Sleep Train Arena from the sideline."
The push Sullinger was referring to is his team’s playoff push, as Boston is only a game and a half out of the 8th seed in the Eastern Conference. Being in the NBA’s weaker half, Boston has a chance to make the playoffs, especially with the recent acquisition of point guard Isaiah Thomas.
Before the injury was announced to be season-ending, Sullinger apparently underestimated how bad it could be.
"“There was just a little discomfort. I tried to play and it just didn’t feel right, so I checked myself out of practice,” he said. “They didn’t tell me a lot. They just told me that I’ll be out for a little bit. It’s not a lot of pain.”"
Sullinger has been a very solid player for the Celtics, especially these past two seasons. After averaging just 6 points and 5.9 rebounds per game his rookie season, Sullinger posted 13.3 points and 8.1 rebounds last season and 14.4 points and 8.1 rebounds thus far this season.
With Sullinger’s absence, the Celtics will surely have a much tougher time making the playoffs.
