Boston Bruins forward David Krejci could miss a significant amount of time after injuring his knee.

The Boston Bruins playoff hopes could go down with Krejci’s knee.

According to NBC Sports Pro Hockey Talk and reported by SportsNet’s Nick Kypreos, Bruins forward David Krejci could be out long term after being injured during Friday night’s game against the St. Louis Blues.

Krejci still needs to be re-evaluated once they return from their road trip, which will most likely be today after they concluded their road trip with a convincing 6-2 win over the Chicago Blackhawks.

Krejci was hurt after attempting an open-ice check on Blues forward Alexander Steen. It was a good hit by Krejci, bit it seems like he got the worst of it as it looks like Krejci and Steen collided knee-on-knee. Krejci was slow to get up and had to be helped into the locker room and did not return.

The Bruins currently sit in the final wildcard spot the Eastern Conference, but the Florida Panthers sit just three points behind them, as well as the Philadelphia Flyers who are just four points behind the Bruins. If the Bruins have any hopes of holding on to that playoff spot, they are going to need Krejci back sooner rather than later.

While the Bruins were able to win convincingly over a very good Blackhawks team on Sunday without Krejci in the lineup, it was the first win the Bruins collected on their five-game road trip and just their second win in their last nine games. The Bruins have struggled to score goals all year, so losing one of their best offensive players certainly won’t help.

Krejci has had bad luck with injuries all year, as he’s been limited to just 38 games this year. In those 38 games, Krejci has collected 7 goals and 19 assists for 26 points. Bruins head coach Claude Julien said that there is good news in that this injury has nothing to do with Krejci’s previous injuries. Still, that doesn’t mean that this new injury isn’t a significant one.

If Krejci is forced to miss 4-6 weeks with this knee injury, it will be very tough for the already struggling Bruins team to hold on to their last playoff spot. The good news is that the Bruins will play six of their next eight games at home, where they are 17-9-4 on the season, as opposed to just 12-12-5 on the road.

If the Bruins want to hold on to their playoff hopes, they are going to need to capitalize at home in these next couple weeks.
