Top Cuban prospect Yoan Moncada will reportedly be headed to the Red Sox
The race to sign the top Cuban baseball prospect in the world, infielder Yoan Moncada, is apparently all done now. In the end, it was the Boston Red Sox that won the sweepstakes for the 19-year-old phenom.
According to ESPN.com, Moncada will be headed to Boston to play for the Red Sox as part of a monster deal that happens to include a bonus in the $30 million range.
While the reports are beginning to leak, Moncada’s agent, David Hastings, denies that anything has been signed at this point.
“We’re still working out the language; it needs to be agreed to by all parties,” Hastings told ESPN.com on Monday morning. “I’m anticipating we’re going to be able to sign.”
Of course, the Red Sox are one of the teams that will make sure that nothing gets in the way of this deal, and it should be done within the next 24 hours with all parties coming to an agreement.
As usual, the Red Sox beat out the Yankees to come to terms with the youngster, yet another feather in their cap with all of this.
Now the question turns to where they will play him. The infield seems pretty much set with Dustin Pedroia, Xander Bogaerts and the newly-signed Pablo Sandoval. Of course, this also gives them the option to not rush things with him in his rookie season, letting him come along at a pace that won’t be detrimental to his career going forward. All too often we’ve seen young players tossed out there too early and they never recover.
