Hurt: Sammie Coates, WR, Auburn

Coates was another guy expected to light things up at this year’s combine but he didn’t manage to be impressive. He measured in at just over 6-foot-1 and 212 pounds, which was a little shorter than most expected.

Coates knocked it out of the park with a 41-inch vertical jump, but the moment everyone was expecting him to shine turned out to be a flop. There were whispers that he could run a sub-4.3 40, and that he would surely come in under 4.4. He was clocked at 4.43, which is fast, but not what observers were expecting from him.

Coates also didn’t help himself during drills as he didn’t look good catching passes. He has suspect hands and has never looked like a natural receiver, and that showed up big time this week.

He did turn in 23 reps on the bench, had a 131-inch broad jump and looked good in the 20-yard shuttle (4.06 seconds). But this was a guy who was going to get taken because he can be a deep threat with some size. For that to happen he’ll have to run faster at his pro day.
