It didn’t take long for the New York City media to tee off on embattled Yankees star Alex Rodriguez, with the New York Daily News delivering perhaps the most savage shot.

Jeez, A-Rod, couldn’t you have waited a few days before giving the media — especially the New York City scribes — fresh meat?

Alex Rodriguez couldn’t wait to return to Spring Training after missing the 2014 season due to his PED-related suspension, so the Yankees third baseman showed up two days early and followed up that surprise by having a group gathering with the media, one that Pinstripes brass is still running hot about.

Needless to say, his early arrival delighted the New York City media longing for something (ANYTHING!!!) other than bashing the Knicks and Rudy Giuliani, so editors across NYC spent much of Monday evening working on creative headlines surrounding the player who just may be the biggest heel (wrestling word, kids) in the city’s vast sports universe.

Most were good, yet, the New York Daily News wins top honors with this blast:

(Guys, pay no attention to the scene on the left, as in none. The focus is on A-Rod, remember?)

Game. Set. Match.

Considering that it’s only February 24, A-Rod is already in midseason form when it comes to grabbing negative headlines, which means he’ll be the gift that keeps on giving to a New York City media that welcomes his missteps. If his offense returns to its mid-2013 form (the one in which Rodriguez was 3 for 40 before being suspended), then March Madness will have a much different meaning for the headline writers in town.
