New York Islanders secure Nick Leddy in 7 year, $38.5 million dollar contract
Defenseman Nick Leddy started his first season the New York Islanders this past October in exchange for fellow defenseman T.J. Brennan. With trade deadlines approaching, the Islanders were not going to risk losing him.
On Tuesday, the New York Islanders announced that they had signed Nick Leddy for another seven years in a $38.5 million dollar contract. At just 23 years old, Leddy has already established himself as a prominent defenseman in the league.
After playing 61 games with the Islanders, Leddy has put up 8 goals and 25 points. Although he is on a bit of a point drought as of late, this is sure to end as quickly as it started. Leddy is an extremely mobile player, and shows his capability to get the puck out of some of the toughest situations.
Due to a salary cap issue, he was dropped from the Chicago Blackhawks roster. However, he quickly found his place in New York, bringing elements to the game that they had previously lacked. Although ‘Hawks fans were sad to see him go, the Islanders are flourishing in the opportunity to have such a skilled young player on their roster.

When the media approached Leddy regarding his shift from Chicago to New York he was quoted saying, “from the start of my time here, the Islanders have been a first-class organization. I’m honored by their commitment to me and look forward to challenging for the Stanley Cup for years to come.” This statement shows the amount of perseverance the young player already has.
Back in 2013, Leddy helped the Blackhawks secure their Stanley Cup victory. During that season he put up two goals in 23 games, and was clocking in over 14 minutes of ice time per game. Now that he is playing with the Islanders, these numbers are sure to increase.
The Islanders are currently in first place in the wild card division in the Eastern Conference behind the Montreal Canadiens, Tampa Bay Lightening, and Detroit Red Wings. Although there are quite a few games left in the regular season, they’re only a few points shy of tying it up with the Lightening, and securing a spot in the playoffs.
