‘Duck Tales’ returning to Disney in 2017

The preeminent animation cartoon of the late 80s and early 90s is returning to Disney in 2017.

Depending on your age—I am 28—you may joyfully remember Duck Tales, a Disney series which kept little children on the edge of their bums for a half hour at a time every weekday afternoon in the late 80s and early 90s.

Though there are a few other series from my childhood which I remember with a similar sort of nostalgia, few match the series which is coming back to television soon.

Of course it spawned an offshoot Darkwing Duck, which remains to this day the greatest animation cartoon series ever on television (no bias there). Unfortunately the caped duck fighting made up criminal cartoon characters is not returning.

But the original program is returning in some form.

Scrooge, Donald Duck and nephews Huey, Dewey and Louie will again span the airwaves on Disney XD in 2017, according to Mashable.com.

Mark Buhaj, senior vice president of programming for Disney XD explained the company’s thoughts on returning Duck Tales to the airwaves.

“Duck Tales has a special place in Disney TV’s animation history, it drew its inspiration from Disney Legend Carl Banks’ comic books and through its storytelling and artistic showmanship, set an enduring standard for animated entertainment that connects with both kids and adults.”

He continued, “Our new series will bring that same energy and adventurous spirit to a new generation.”

Whether the new version can spawn the same nostalgia and energy is unclear. One thing is for sure, if we do not get the same theme song with the lyric, “Duck Tales woo ooo ooh”, then this is a bad idea.

Disney will officially present its new lineup, including the remake at its annual Upfronts presentation in New York City in April.

Past remakes of old childhood favorites, Power Rangers to bring to mind the most egregious, have not fared well. Can Disney bring a classic to this new age of children’s programming, which must be by necessity much more worldly and sophisticated as this generation’s of children are sharper even than my own.

Childhood ADD and ADHD are rampant, though the results are often seen later in life. Generation X is thought to have the worst case of it, and some of that may be due to show like Duck Tales and Darkwing Duck, with the constant flashing images, onomatopoeia and several other oratory and visual devices which appeal to the young mind but ultimately stunt its growth.
